What, you don’t need a doctor?

Indiana was the final state to enact direct access, the ability to seek physical therapy services without a physician prescription. In July 2013, Governor Mike Pence signed into legislation HB 1034, allowing physical therapists to evaluate and treat without a doctor’s consent.
To clarify the bullet points of this legislation, physician-less PT is permitted for 24 calendar days for examination and treatment. There are some limitations including grade five spinal mobilization, or what many refer to as spinal manipulation or adjustment.
This historic legislation will provide some autonomy for physical therapists who specialize in musculoskeletal injury and rehabilitation as well as save the patient some dollars. Prior to enactment of HB 1034, a patient would have been required to pay a doctor’s visit for the referral to physical therapy services in Indiana.
